Who is God? … Pt. 1: The Word

John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). If one digs deeper into this first verse of God’s word, you will have a whole new outlook toward creation and its Creator. We will discuss the heavens and the earth in a later blog post but let’s explore the genesis of everything we see and … don’t see. More specifically, “In the beginning God!

Who is God? Let’s connect the dots according to scripture. “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one” (1 John 5:7). God is first our Father in heaven. The Holy Spirit is also God. He makes his first appearance in scripture in verse two of Genesis: “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Today, the Holy Spirit lives inside each believer of Christ. “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you” (Romans 8:11). And that brings us to “the Word” – the reason why creation exists.

The Word” is also God. Take note that “the Word” is one with “the Father” and “the Holy Spirit.” How can three distinct manifestations (forms of an individual) be one entity? The best way I know how to explain the “trinity” concept is to use H2O in place of God. H2O is the chemical formula for water, ice or steam; three forms but the same core substance. God is therefore the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. Now we are getting to the reason why creation exists.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1-3). Wow! Note that “the Word” was with God, and is God, from the very beginning in Genesis 1:1 and that creation was made because of Him. Again this confirms the three in one concept. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). The dots keep connecting. Jesus Christ said, “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30) and “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). The truth is Jesus. The way is Jesus. Eternal life is through Jesus. The Word is Jesus. Jesus is God and the reason why our Creator, the Father, made everything.
